Susan Rides Again!
Here I am, participating in another Camp Challenge and fundraising to support the mission and programs of The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.
I really enjoy doing my best to help these kids raise a little hell! Last year a camp participant spoke to us: he was about 12 or 13, and outwardly was not disabled, but in fact he had a condition that required constant adult supervision. He could keel over at any moment and require immediate care. No running around with a group of buddies: until he got to camp, with a whole bunch of kids and adults who knew just what it was like, and where he could just be himself and not "the sick kid." It was very moving, and I resolved to make this year count.
Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is dedicated to providing "a different kind of healing" to more than 20,000 seriously ill children and family members annually - all completely free of charge. For many of these children and families, Hole in the Wall provides multiple Camp experiences throughout the year at the facility in Ashford, Conn., in more than 40 hospitals and clinics, directly in camper homes and communities, and through other outreach activities across the Northeast.
Watch that video. These are not actors. This is not a daycare. It's a special kind of medical care, to give a child an alternative to a hard slog through life: to encourage an attitude and promote the skills to live the best they can.
Please help me reach (or even exceed!) my goal. With your generosity, we can all share in the joy of knowing that we are helping to provide "a different kind of healing" to seriously ill children and family members.
