Matthew's Fitness Fundraiser for Hole in the Wall Gang Camp
Thank you for visiting my Fitness Fundraiser for Camp page! I'm raising money to help campers and their families at The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.
Founded in 1988 by Paul Newman, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is a community dedicated to providing “a different kind of healing” to seriously ill children and their families through a variety of year-round programs. It was Paul’s dream that Camp, with its unobtrusive expert medical care, would provide seriously ill children with a fun-filled experience defined by compassion, laughter and acceptance. The Camp delivers fun, friendship and a healthy dose of mischief through its signature summer program and weekend sessions at the Camp facility in Ashford, Connecticut, as well as outreach to hospitals, clinics and communities across the Northeast. The accessibility of the programs along with a significant, yet unobtrusive medical presence allows campers to embrace possibilities and safely challenge perceived limitations. Among kindred spirits facing similar challenges, campers escape isolation and find a community defined by acceptance. All services are free of charge.
I am one of the lucky ones who has experienced the magic of camp as a camper. I was 12 when I attended camp for the first time and this past fall was my last time at camp as a camper, but I hope to be connected to camp as a volunteer for a lifetime. It probably sounds like a cliche, but people at Camp just “get it.” They don’t judge, there are no put downs, and everyone is special. There are also lots of hugs, high fives, smiles, laughter, and ridiculous songs and dances. Camp gives kids, and their families, the chance to forget about the daily grind of chronic illness. That is why I want to give back by participating in my own event. On Monday, March 6th from 3-5pm, you can join me at the track at Westminster School in Simsbury, CT to walk, ride, or bike in support of Camp. In the past, I rode as part of Angel Ride, an annual 25 mile bike ride to raise money and awareness for The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp. This year I won’t be able to attend, but I still want to help. I plan to ride one mile for every $100 that is donated, up to $2500. That is the cost to send one child to camp for a week. Please consider making a donation to help kids with cancer, sickle cell, immune deficiency and other life-threatening diseases have the chance to “raise a little hell.”
Get involved and you can make twice the impact! Positive Tracks, a national, sports-based youth development organization that helps young people get active and give back will be doubling our efforts! That means every dollar donated will actually be $2! With your generosity, we can all share in the joy of knowing that we are helping to provide "a different kind of healing" to children and families coping with serious illnesses. Help me share the magic of camp with others.
